Chapter – 00:15 – Important Topics covered in this video

– Howard Gardner
– The Multiple Intelligence Theory
– Different ways of processing information?
– Expansion of Gardner’s Theory
– Multiple Intelligences
– Criticism of Multiple Intelligence Theory
– Multiple Learning Styles
– Five Sample Questions from previous question papers

Chapter – 00:47 – About Howard Gardner

Howard Gardner – American Developmental Psychologist.

Best known for his theory of Multiple Intelligences.

Outlined the theory in his 1983 book – Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

Defined Intelligence as the ability to solve problems or fashion products that are of consequence in a particular cultural setting or community.

Chapter – 01:41 – Multiple Intelligence Theory – Howard Gardner

– Humans have several different ways of processing information
– There are a wide range of different abilities operating in the human mind
– These abilities do not necessarily correlate strongly with each other
– However, they do not operate completely independently

Chapter – 04:53 – Different ways of processing information?

Examples of how Humans have several different ways of processing information

Chapter – 05:48 – Expansion or Evolution of Gardner’s Theory

In 1983, Gardner proposed seven types of intelligence:

– Linguistic-Verbal
– Musical-Rhythmic & Harmonic
– Logical-Mathematical
– Visual-spatial
– Bodily-Kinaesthetic
– Intrapersonal
– Interpersonal

In 1995, he added Naturalistic Intelligence to the list.

In 2016, he mentioned that Existential and Teaching-Pedagogical intelligences may also be two other types that may be considered.

Chapter – 06:38 – Multiple Intelligences listed by Howard Gardner

Linguistic-Verbal – Reading, writing, telling stories & memorizing words

Musical-Rhythmic-Harmonic – Sensitivity to the sounds, rhythms & tones of music.

Logical-Mathematical – Logic, abstractions, reasoning, numbers & critical thinking.

Visual-spatial – Spatial judgment & the ability to mentally visualize.

Bodily-Kinaesthetic – Physical activities such as sports, dance & making things.

Interpersonal – Communicate effectively, empathize easily with others.

Intrapersonal – Self-control, ability to predict one’s own reactions & emotions.

Naturalistic – Ability to understand the Natural world, flora and fauna.

Chapter – 07:58 – Criticism of Multiple Intelligence Theory

– Not measurable using a standardized formula or method
– Talent or Intelligence? – Musical, Interpersonal
– Lack of empirical evidence – dependence on subjective judgement
– Cannot be applied to compare a set of learners against each other in a classroom

* Empirical evidence is the Qualitative &/or Quantitative information obtained through observation and documentation of certain behaviour and patterns or through an experiment.

Chapter – 09:07 – Multiple Learning Styles

Visual – By Seeing – For Visual and Spatial intelligence related learning

Auditory – By Hearing – For Musical and Interpersonal intelligence related learning

Reading – Writing – By Reading, Writing – For Intrapersonal and Linguistic intelligence related learning

Kinaesthetic – By Doing – For Kinaesthetic and Naturalistic intelligence related learning

Chapter – 10:25 – Theory of multiple intelligences implies the following except

– emotional intelligence is related to IQ
– intelligence is a distinct set of processing operations used by an individual to solve problems
– disciplines should be presented in a number of ways
– learning could be assessed through a variety of means

Chapter – 12:07 – Gardener initially formulated seven intelligences. Which among the following is not one of them?

– spatial
– linguistic
– interpersonal
– naturalistic

Chapter – 12:37 – Which of the following observations supports Howard Gardener’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences?

– Different intelligences are hierarchical in nature
– Teachers should follow one specific theory of educational innovation at the time of designing instruction
– Damage to one part of the brain affects only a particular ability sparing others
– Intelligence is an interaction of analytical, creative, and practical intelligence’s

Chapter – 13:14 – Following are the critical views about the ‘Theory of Multiple Intelligences’, except

– it is not research-based
– different intelligence’s demand different methods for different students
– gifted students usually excel in a single domain
– it lacks of empirical support

Chapter – 14:02 – Howard Gardener’s theory of multiple intelligences emphasises

– conditioning skills in students
– general intelligence
– common abilities required in school
– the unique abilities of each individual
