Every year, you will see at least one question about Cephalocaudal and Proximodistal development.

So, what is the difference?

Cephalo means – from the head and Caudal means – towards the tail.

This principle says that the development of a baby starts from the head and progresses towards the tail – or the lower parts of the body.

The child learns to control his head and neck first, then the arms and then the legs.

Coming to Proximo distal development, Proximo means from near the center and Distal means towards the outside

This principle says that the development of a baby starts from near the center of the body and moves towards the outside

The child’s spinal cord develops first, then the arms and legs and finally, the fingers and toes.
