Introduction – About CTET Paper I

The CTET Paper I is the qualification exam for candidates who intend to be a teacher for classes I to V.

Any candidate, who wishes to be eligible to be a teacher for both levels (classes I to V and classes VI to VIII) will have to appear in both the papers (Paper I and Paper II). Both of these papers can be attempted in the same exam in 2024 or 2025 OR candidates may choose to attempt each paper in different exam years.

  • Candidates may choose to take up Paper II before Paper I or vice-versa. (No specific order has been prescribed by the authorities.)
  • Candidates may have a gap of any number of years between attempting Papers I and II
  • There is no upper age limit for taking up the CTET exam
  • The qualification certificate for Papers 1 and 2 are independent of each other – and will be valid for lifetime

Structure & Type of Questions in the CTET Paper I – CDP

All the questions in the CTET Paper I – 2024 and 2025 examination will be Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), with four answer options – with one correct / best / appropriate answer.

Each question will carry one mark for the correct answer; and there will be no negative marking for wrong answers or un-attempted questions.

The complete paper 1 will be for 150 marks (150 MCQs) – of which, Child Development and Pedagogy will have 30 MCQs (30 marks). CDP is a mandatory subject in the CTET Paper 1.

The time allotted for paper I will be Two-and-a-half hours (180 minutes) – which means that candidates will have an average of 72 seconds for each question. Realistically speaking, candidates should practice solving Paper 1 at a speed of 1 question per minute.

CTET Paper I – CDP – Nature and standard of questions

The questions (MCQs) on Child Development and Pedagogy in the CTET paper 1 will focus on educational psychology of teaching and learning relevant to the age group of 6 to 11 years (Primary Stage).

They will assess the candidate’s understanding of the characteristics and needs of diverse learners, interaction with learners and the attributes and qualities of a good facilitator of learning.

a) Child Development (Primary School Child) – 15 MCQs – 15 Marks

b) Concept of Inclusive education and understanding children with special needs – 5 MCQs – 5 Marks

  • Addressing learners from diverse backgrounds including disadvantaged and deprived

  • How children think and learn; how and why children ‘fail’ to achieve success in school performance.
