What are the three types of speech as per Vygotsky’s theory?
As per Vygotsky, there are three main types of speech. Public or External speech, Private Speech and Silent-Inner or Inner Speech.
Public speech is used for external communication, i.e., communicating with others; whereas Private and Silent Inner or Internal speech are used for Self-Regulation or Self-Guidance.
Public or External speech and Private Speech are audible to others; whereas Silent-Inner or Inner Speech is ‘Silent’ and not audible to anyone else.
Typically, children start using Public or External speech from the age of two years, Private Speech from the age of three years and Silent-Inner or Inner Speech from the age of seven years.
If both ‘Private’ and ‘Silent Inner’ or ‘Internal speech’ are used for Self-Regulation or Self-Guidance. What is the difference between them?
We can say that Private speech is thinking out aloud, whereas Private Speech and Silent-Inner are thinking inside the mind.
When the child becomes a little older, becomes more self-conscious and does not want others to hear his thoughts, the Private speech becomes Silent-Inner speech.
People continue to use all the three types of speech life-long.
