What are Vygotsky’s Socio-cultural theory and Social Constructivism?

Constructivism says that children don’t just passively receive information, but they actively construct knowledge in their brains – using the information inputs that they receive.

If you think of knowledge as a building – then, social and cultural inputs are like bricks and language is like the cement that can be used in constructing the knowledge.

Social information is received through social interactions, like with family, peers, teachers… and the cultural information is received through factors like religion, laws, rules and customs.

Language is what makes all of this possible – because, language is not just a tool for receiving and sending information; it is also a system for thinking, logic and reasoning.

Whenever you come across questions based on Vygotsky’s socio cultural constructivist theories – remember the SCL formula – the correct answer will have social interactions, cultural factors, language or a combination of these.
