In this article, we have collated information about the NLU scholarship programs, fee waivers and financial assistance offered by various institutions to the incoming batch of LLB students through the CLAT 2020 exam.

In general, the older NLUs like the NLSIU, NALSAR, WBNUJS and NLUJ have more number of established scholarships and financial assistance programs. This may be due to the contributions by the wider Alumni networks or creation of a corpus by the institutions themselves.

GNLU Gandhinagar seems to have earmarked the largest corpus for Scholarships and Financial assistance, with an amount of Rs.1.7 Crores for the previous academic year.  NUSRL Ranchi may have the highest number of endowment medal awards, with 19 listed on their official website.

Some NLUs are quite clear about the scholarship programs, by publishing the information in their website and their CLAT brochures, whereas others have hidden it away deep inside their website or the details are scattered among other notifications.

Since scholarship related information is of keen interest to many of the applicants, NLUs should consider publishing the details along with the academic fees section on the websites and the CLAT 2020 brochure.


NLSIU, Bengaluru CLAT Scholarship

In order to attract meritorious students from the lower socio-economic strata of society, the NLSIU attempts to provide as many scholarships as possible. In addition to the scholarships mentioned below, fee concession to the extent possible is granted on the recommendations of the Scholarship Committee for deserving students.

Merit Scholarship – Students who secure CGPA of 6.00 out of 7.00 in the previous year will be given a Merit Scholarship Certificate.

Merit cum Means Scholarship – The Scholarship amount sanctioned will be adjusted against the fees payable to the NLSIU or the mess bills during the year. In case there is any amount outstanding to the students after adjusting the fees or mess bill, the balance amount will be given to the student at the end of the Third Trimester.

Academic Assistance Scheme

Students in need of financial assistance can undertake academic and organisational responsibilities under the supervision of Faculty members for not more than thirty hours per month, the compensation will be at the rate of Rs. 20/- per hour. The nature of the responsibilities may be one the lines of a Research Assistant or a Teaching Assistant, to handle administrative tasks.

CLAT Scholarships at NLSIU
  • Shankaramma Memorial Trust Scholarship – Rs. 500/- per month is awarded every year to two or more students preferably from Andhra Pradesh.
  • Velakacherla Narasa Reddy Rural India Merit Scholarship – One scholarship is awarded every year to a student commencing the IV year studies.
  • Justice Venkataswamy, Mrs. & Mr.Mariappa Gowda and Mrs. & Mr. B. Narayan Scholarship – Awarded to a highly deserving student of NLSIU towards his/her boarding/ lodging charges in the University.
  • Late Justice B. Vasudevamurthy scholarship – Awarded to one deserving and meritorious student, who is not otherwise able to join this University due to economic conditions.
  • Hemant Narichania Scholarship – Awarded to II and III year meritorious students of B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) from lower socio-economic strata of society.
  • The Bodh Raj Sawhney Scholarship – Awarded every year to a highly deserving student.
  • The Lalit Bhasin Scholarship – Awarded every year to the highly deserving student.
  • Dr. K. Manorama Scholarship – Awarded to a II year Girl Student based on merit-cum-means.
  • Sam Byramji Nariman Scholarship – Awarded every year to the highly deserving student, instituted by Mr.Fali S.Nariman.
  • M.S.S. Rao NLU Scholarship – Awarded every year to the highly deserving student. The scholarship amount is Rs. 6,250/-.
  • Manupatra Scholarship – Awarded every year to the highly deserving student to cover the full fee.
  • Shivaraya Mallar and Yamunabai – Awarded to one of the girl students pursuing B.A., LL.B (Hons) who is economically backward.
  • Vagdevi Merit Scholarship – Awarded to a deserving and needy student
  • Mrs. Sarojini Menon Scholarship – Awarded every year for deserving students

 

All of the above scholarship awards are made out of the interest income generated by a respective endowment amount. The award decision is made by the NLU Scholarship Committee.

Central Government Scholarships at NLSIU
  • Ten SC students would receive financial assistance from the Ministry of Social Justice for the duration of their studies at NLSIU.
  • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs extends financial assistance to five ST students during their first year of study here.
  • The assistance would cover fees, boarding & lodging charges, books & stationery and the cost of a computer.
  • The selection of the students will be on the basis of Inter-se ranking secured in the admission test i.e. CLAT 2020 and the level of family income.

 

NSLIU Students are also eligible to apply for external financial assistance programs, including the Aditya Birla Scholarships.

NALSAR, Hyderabad CLAT 2020 Scholarships

The University mentions that students can avail various scholarships and fee concessions. No specific details have been published about the number or quantum of the scholarships available for CLAT 2020 LLB students.

The University has mentioned that it liaises with the Centre and the State to ensure that all government schemes for financial aid are available to NALSAR students.

The Institute has also published a detailed document about how the NLU Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee will calculate the various parameters for awarding the scholarships. e.g. Income, CGPA.

NALSAR Students admitted through CLAT 2020 are also eligible to apply for financial assistance programs, including the Aditya Birla Scholarships.

WBNUJS, Kolkata CLAT Scholarship

With donations from individual donors and institutions, the WBNUJS has built up a Scholarship Fund,  which is utilised to provide financial assistance to students on a need basis. The Government of West Bengal has also provided a grant to the University, which includes funds of up to Rs. 40 Lakhs per annum for the ‘means-cum-merit scholarship’ granted by the University.

The alumni of NUJS and various donors have also instituted many scholarships for WBNUJS students. The specific details have not been published in the website or the previous CLAT brochure.

Students can also pursue scholarship schemes sponsored by the Central Government and the State Government for socially or economically backward students.

WBNUJS Students admitted through CLAT 2020 are also eligible to apply for external  financial assistance programs, including the Aditya Birla Scholarships.

NLU, Jodhpur CLAT NLU Scholarship

NLU Jodhpur will provide financial assistance to two meritorious LLB students from low income families. The CLAT 2020 NLU Scholarship shall be awarded at the end of each academic year, in the form of a refund of the tuition fees that the student has already paid.

  • The students should not have taken admission in either the NRl or NRl-sponsored categories
  • The total annual income of the student’s parents / guardian should be below Six lakh rupees
  • The student’s cumulative CGPA of all the previous semesters should be no less than six in the first attempt itself
  • The candidates should not have been availing any other scholarship/financial aid during the relevant time period

 

If the other parameters are same, weightage will be given to a student coming from a family with comparatively lower annual income.

NLU Jodhpur Students are also eligible to apply for external financial assistance programs, including the Aditya Birla Scholarships.

NLIU, Bhopal CLAT 2020 Scholarships

NLIU Bhopal has instituted the following Scholarships to provide scholarships for incoming students through CLAT 2020.

  • Merit cum Means Scholarships in the memory of Late Justice J. S. Verma
  • Merit cum Means Scholarships in the name of the University.

 

The NLU scholarship will cover full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) Course.

In the first year of the course the scholarships are awarded to the NLIU students securing highest marks in the CLAT 2020 exams.

From second year to fifth year the scholarships are awarded to the students securing highest marks  in the NLIU examinations of every year.

Apart from merit, the annual income of the parents of the students shall be factored in while deciding on the the eligibility. The NLIU scholarship committee or the NLIU management will decide on the award of the scholarships for every academic year.

Students can also pursue all external scholarships instituted by the Government and other trusts, corporate bodies.

GNLU, Gandhinagar CLAT 2020 Scholarships

GNLU seems to have one of the most generous scholarships, financial assistance, awards and student activities program funding among all the NLUs. As per their website, for FY 2018-19 approximately Rs. 1.7 Crore was used for this purpose.

The list of scholarships, fee waivers and awards that CLAT 2020 selected candidates can apply for is as below.

  • Scholarship for CLAT meritorious students – Rs. 5 lakhs
    CLAT 2020 Rank 1-20 – 100% waiver
    CLAT 2020 Rank 21-40 – 50% waiver

MNLU, Aurangabad CLAT 2020 Scholarships

The Institute has not specifically mentioned any details of the Scholarships or fee waivers that can be available by the incoming students admitted through CLAT 2020.

Even in the absence MNLU specific scholarships, students should apply for external programs they are eligible for, such as the G. E. Vahanvati Memorial Merit Scholarship and also purse the schemes set up the Central and State Governments.

MNLU, Mumbai NLU Scholarship for CLAT

MNLU Mumbai has mentioned on their brochure and website that the following Concessions and Scholarships are available for students being admitted through the CLAT 2020 examination.

  • For students domiciled in Maharashtra, the University provides 25 percent concession in the tuition fees subject to fulfilment of requisite conditions.
  • The University facilitates the students belonging to reserved category of Maharashtra state to avail the scholarship offered by the Department of Social Justice & Assistance, Government of Maharashtra.
  • The University facilitates scholarship for students domiciled in other states in accordance with Central/State government rules and policies.

 

In addition, all students will be eligible to apply for off campus NLU scholarship programs run by external agencies.

MNLU, Nagpur CLAT 2020 Scholarships

MNLU Nagpur mentions that incoming students through CLAT 2020 will be eligible for the ‘Ram Jethmalani Merit-cum-Need Scholarship’ program.

Additionally, students can apply for external programs they are eligible for, such as the MERCK – MICT Scholarship and also purse the schemes set up the Central and State Governments.

HNLU, Raipur 2020 NLU Scholarship Programs

As per the HNLU Raipur brochure / website, Students belonging to SC, ST and OBC category are provided with scholarships from the Government of India and Chhattisgarh.

Further, the students belonging to SAP and Minority Communities are also provided with scholarship under various Government Schemes.

Incoming students from CLAT 2020 should actively track and apply for various external financial assistance programs, such as :

  • Programs available through the National Scholarships Portal
  • State Government Scholarships of the candidate’s domicile state
  • Minority Scholarships available both at a State and Central levels
  • State and Central Scholarships for Differently-abled Students

RMLNLU, Lucknow – NLU Scholarships for CLAT 2020

As per their brochure and website, RMLNLU provides scholarships to the incoming CLAT admitted candidates of SC/ST/OBC of Uttar Pradesh and also to the students of unreserved categories having family income less than 2.00 lac per annum, under various schemes of the Department of Social Welfare, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh.

Students of these categories are also eligible for reimbursement of their annual fee subject to fulfilment of the conditions laid down by the Social Welfare Department, Backward Class Welfare Department, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh, as the case may be.

RMLNLU is also included in the list of institutions of excellence under the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for SC/ST Students. Under this scheme five eligible students of
SC/ST category are provided scholarship which include reimbursement of full tuition fee, living expenses @ of Rs. 2,220/- per month, books & stationery @ Rs. 3,000/- per annum and computer/accessories up to Rs. 45,000/- per annum per student.

Reimbursement / partial reimbursement of tuition fee along with other financial incentives is also available under UGC Scheme of ‘Free Education for Sports Medal Winner/Participants of
National/International Events’.

Scholarships are also available for SAP Category students under various schemes of National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation (NHFDC).

RGNUL, Punjab CLAT Scholarship 2020

As per the information published on their brochure and / or their website, RGNUL offers scholarships for meritorious students of B.A.LL.B. and LL.M. Courses and students belonging to SAP category. In addition, various Nodal Officers of the University facilitate the students in applying for and availing State and Centre Governments Scholarship.

Scholarships and financial assistance programs specifically mentioned are :

  • Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for Scheduled Caste (SC) Students – five scholarships by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
  • The University may give maximum concession up to 50% of the tuition fee to two most deserving students of each class.
  • Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for Scheduled Tribe (ST) Students – two scholarships have been allotted by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.

 

Those students who are eligible and wish to avail any of the scholarships need to submit their applications along with required documents within one month or less (depending on the specific program). Incoming students through CLAT 2020 are advised to contact the University Authorities at the time of their admissions itself and ensure that they track and apply for any financial assistance programs as per eligibility.

NLUO, Odisha – CLAT 2020 NLU Scholarship Schemes

As per their  National Law University – NLUO, Odisha offers CLAT 2020 scholarship to deserving and needy students from second year onward, keeping in view their financial status, need and their academic achievement(s).

The University also makes every effort to announce scholarships offered by outside agencies which may be of interest to their students. However, students should diligently track and apply for any external financial assistance programs that they are eligible for.

Earning while learning
‘Earning while learning’ is a student aid scheme instituted by NLUO to help students with financial need. Under this Scheme University allows students to serve in the library or work on research projects undertaken by the University time to time in lieu of remuneration to be decided by the University. This is similar to the ‘Academic assistant’ or ‘Research Assistant’ programs that exist in other institutions.

NUALS, Kochi – CLAT Scholarship 2020

As per the details provided in the NUALS CLAT Brochure and website, there are a few CLAT 2020 NLU scholarship programs and fee waivers that are available for students admitted to their LLB programs through the CLAT entrance exam.

The M.K. Nambiyar Memorial Endowment will help meritorious, but economically weak students to complete their education by offering full or partial waiver of fees, support students to take
part in International Moot Court Competitions and to organise annual lectures, besides contributing for a special Computer for blind students.

NUALS also provides partial free-ship or fee waiver to economically weaker students by offering 50% of concession in tuition fee.

Students belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Other Eligible Communities are eligible for educational concessions from the Government of Kerala.

There are also several external scholarships and financial assistance programs available for all NLU students.

CNLU, Patna – CLAT 2020 NLU Scholarship

CNLU Patna has not specifically mentioned about any scholarships or free-ships applicable to their students. However, in line with other NLUs, there will be a set of standard financial assistance, fee waiver or  scholarship programs available for students being admitted through the CLAT 2020.

DSNLU, Visakhapatanam – CLAT Scholarship

DSNLU’s CLAT brochure and website do not provide any clear details about the financial assistance programs or scholarship for CLAT 2020 selected students. However, given the importance of the institute, it will have the required support from the State and Central Governments to ensure assistance to students in financial need.

Students can also apply for external programs that are available for all NLU students. Interested candidates should contact the DSNLU officials at the time of the admissions formalities and ascertain the availability and eligibility for such schemes; and seek their assistance for any programs that need to be applied through the Institute.

HPNLU, Shimla – CLAT Scholarship 2020

HPNLU is a relatively new institution and may not have formal scholarship programs for UG students admitted through the CLAT 2020.  However, due to the premier status of the NLU, students will be eligible for any of the State or Government level schemes applicable for Under Graduate level students.

HPNLU CLAT admitted students should also track and apply for any of the  several external scholarships and financial assistance programs as per their eligibility.

MPDNLU, Jabalpur NLU Scholarship

According to the MPDNLU CLAT brochure and website, candidates admitted to the UG LLB programs through CLAT 2020 can avail various scholarship provided by the M.P. State, Other States and Central Government of India.

Under the M.P. State Government, there are various scholarships for specific NLU students, under schemes such as :

  • Mukhya Mantri Medhavi Yojana
  • Mukhya Mantri Jankalyan Yojana
  • Pratibha Yojana
  • Goan Ki Beti Yojana
  • Pratibha Kiran Yojana

 

Many of these schemes for OBC, SC and ST candidates can be availed by the candidates belonging to Madhya Pradesh.

Candidates belonging to other states can also avail the scholarships as per the rules and regulation of their respective states.

In addition, candidates can also avail the scholarships sponsored by Central Government of India.

They have mentioned that around 40 students out of 120 in the previous batch are availing some scholarships under various schemes of the State Government as well as Central Government. This is a very encouraging number in terms of assistance to needy candidates.

CLAT 2020 admits who do not qualify for the ‘on campus’  financial assistance programs should apply for external programs as per their eligibility.

NLUJA, Assam CLAT Scholarship

As a newer NLU, NLUJA may not have many in-house scholarship programs for CLAT 2020 students. Interested students should contact the NLUJA office and confirm the details of any available programs at the time of the admissions formalities.

NLUJA admits should apply for any of the several external scholarships and financial assistance programs available for all NLU students.

NUSRL, Ranchi CLAT Scholarships

While NUSRL CLAT brochure and website do not have any specific information about scholarships, the official website does have a long list of endowment medal awards that can be applied for by the incoming UG students, selection through the CLAT 2020.

TNNLU, Tiruchirappalli, NLU Scholarship programs

The Tamil Nadu National Law University has mentioned a few  NLU Scholarship and Financial Assistance Schemes on their brochure and website.

The TNNLU Financial Assistance Scheme provides for full or partial waiver of fees and charges for the entire duration of the UG LLB program of study or part of such program.

Students eligible for the Financial Assistance Scheme will be selected solely on the basis of the financial ability of their families. Applications are sought from eligible students during each academic year.

There are also several State Government schemes for minority and reserved category communities, the details of which are available on the State Government websites.
