One of the most frequently asked questions about the CLAT 2020 is about the expected Cut Off for the various NLUs. In fact there are hundreds of articles out there which track and predict the CLAT scores for 2020.

Let us start off by clarifying and understanding the three different and important parts of your CLAT 2020 score card.

CLAT 2020 Score

The marks you have scored out of the maximum possible 200. This is calculated by adding up the number of correct answers and deducting 0.25 Marks for every wrong answer.

CLAT 2020 All India Rank

The overall rank among all the candidates who took the exam. Very often, several candidates would have scored the same marks; in which case, a ‘forced ranking’ is done by using the following parameters:

  • Higher marks in the legal aptitude section
  • Higher age of the candidate
  • Computerised draw of lots
CLAT 2020 Category Rank

This is calculated by segregating the candidates into the various seat reservation categories and ranking them on the basis of their scores. If multiple candidates have the same scores, the ‘forced ranking’ parameters are used to break the tie.

Immediately after the CLAT 2020 key is released, many candidates will tabulate their scores and start checking various websites which claim to predict the CLAT cut-off scores. Candidates often get quite worried about the scores.

These Cut-off score predictions are like all those social media ‘FLAMES Calculator’ or ‘Love Calculator’ scores – they can be fun, they will keep you busy, they will give you something to think about, but they are quite useless.

The most important factor among the three parts of your CLAT 2020 score card is the Category Rank.

Ultimately, it is the Category Rank that is used to create the NLU admissions selection list.

The CLAT Scores can vary every year, depending on factors like the the complexity of the paper and the number of cancelled questions. This can be easily seen by looking at the CLAT All India Rank – 1 score or marks trend from the previous year’s CLAT exams.

What remains quite predictable is the range of Cut off Ranks for admissions into the NLUs.

** Safe Cut-off rank for 2020.

The top ranking NLUs are highest on the preference lists of most of the candidates, the drop-out percentage will be very negligible, and so the admissions get closed at around a similar AIR every year.

As we go down the list, the variations will increase, due to the higher number of drop outs, changes in the order of preference by the candidates and other factors such as domicile reservation.

The most accurate prediction for CLAT 2020 cut off ranks, which almost guarantees admission into these NLUs can be as per the table below.

The caveat is that deviation or the error rate increases as you go down the list.

The implementation of the EWS quota across various states may also lead to variations in the 2020 Cut offs.
