Though Legal Education in India is still less expensive than most other professional courses, the cost of a five year NLU LLB can still be out of reach for many students. 

Over the next few articles, we will be covering CLAT 2020 Scholarships for NLU LLB Students, freeships and fee waivers offered by various organisations , in-house programs offered by some of the NLUs and also education loans by banks and specialised financial agencies.

In this article, we are covering several off-campus scholarships available for candidates taking up CLAT 2020 for pursuing LLB in an NLU. Students preparing for the CLAT should consider applying for eligible scholarships to help defray some of the costs of their degree.

The icing on the cake is that some of these scholarships are also badges of honour that can be added to your resume and profile as significant achievements.

Aditya Birla Scholarships

Instituted in 1999, the Aditya Birla Scholarships provide an excellent opportunity for Scholars to learn through networking with one of India’s first global conglomerates.

Though there is no binding to join the Group after the completion of their course, scholars are welcome to work with them should they qualify to do so.

The Aditya Birla Scholarships cover a large part of the tuition fee for students in the Law stream. The scholarship amount for LLB studies is Rs. 1,80,000 per year or fees at actuals, whichever is lower.

Students from the following institutes can apply for the Scholarships:

  • National Law School of India University – Bangalore,
  • NALSAR University of Law – Hyderabad,
  • The WB National University of Juridical Sciences – Kolkata,
  • National Law University – Jodhpur
  • Gujarat National Law University


Application Procedure:

The top 20 students, in terms of their CLAT Ranking, from each of these Institutions can apply through the Dean of the respective institutes.

Selection Procedure:

  • A total of 100 students from law campuses will be evaluated on the basis of the information given in the application form.
  • The students’ overall achievements spanning academic and co-curricular excellence will be assessed to select him/her for the next round.
  • Essays written by these students will then be reviewed by a panel to shortlist candidates for the final round.
  • Shortlisted students will be invited for an interview which will determine the best 8 from among the law studies applicants, who will be named Aditya Birla Scholars.
  • The performance of the Scholars will be monitored closely for the renewal of the Scholarship every year.


The Scholarships are valid for the complete duration of the course, subject to ongoing performance assessment as per a set criteria every year. As the Scholarship is announced only in September and given that students would have already paid their fees, the Institute will refund the amount paid.

National Scholarship Portal – Government of India

The Central and State Governments have many scholarship programs that are often hidden away in some obscure notifications on various institutional websites.

The National Scholarships Portal is a Project under National e-Governance Plan (NeGP), which offers a one-stop solution for tracking and applying for many of these scholarship programs.

The website offers various services, such as publication of notifications, online student applications, application receipt, processing, sanction and disbursal of the amounts to selected students.

As such, there are several scholarship programs for undergraduate level students, which can be available of by the candidates pursuing LLB programs at the NLUs through CLAT 2020.

Joining hands – Higher education Scholarship programme

Joining Hands expanded its outreach by initiating the Higher Education Scholarship Programme in association with Cadence Design Systems IPL.

This programme facilitates the higher education of less privileged students by sponsoring their fees and other related expenses for professional courses, including the study of Law.

Dr. Goolam E. Vahanvati Memorial Merit Scholarship Fund For LLB Students

The fund was created in honor of the late Dr. Goolam E. Vahanvati, an Indian senior counsel who served as the 13th Attorney General for India.

The Dr. Goolam E. Vahanvati Scholarship Fund aims to provide aspiring law students from an underprivileged background the opportunity to study in any law college in India including the NLUs in which they secure admission through merit, by way of competitive exams like the CLAT 2020.

Scholarship Benefits and Awards:

  • 50,000 aid per scholar per year towards payment of tuition fees and other academic expenses.
  • Scholars will also receive mentoring from top law professionals and GEV Scholars
  • Exposure among the Judiciary Community of India from events/interactions organised under the mentorship program


For subsequent years, the scholarship instalment will be based on the scholars’ academic performance

MERCK India Charitable Trust – MICT Scholarship Program

Merck was founded in 1668 at Darmstadt, Germany, by Friedrich Jacob Merck. Merck was incorporated in India as E. Merck India Private Limited in 1967. Starting out as a pharmaceutical company, Merck has become a science and technology business spanning all the sectors of Healthcare, Life Science and Performance Materials.

This scholarship is awarded to encourage talented under-privileged students who are keen to pursue their education and achieve graduation in a subject of their choice, including Law (LLB) at the NLUs through CLAT 2020.

Through this program, Merck contributes towards the cost of education, subject to certain limits, as scholarship to selected students who have successfully passed out from the 10th standard until the completion of their graduation course.

What makes the MICT Scholarship unique is the long- term support offered to the selected scholars, enabling them to focus on studies and lay the foundation for a secure future.

G. P. Birla Scholarship

The G. P. Birla Trust has been established to carry forward the cherished dream of the Late Shri G. P. Birla, the renowned Industrialist and Philanthropist, to promote education, develop human resources and empower the youth of the Country.

The Trust grants Scholarships to meritorious students, male or female, from West Bengal, who have passed class XII examination and have secured 80% marks or more from State Board or 85% or more from Central Board and whose family income is less than Rs. 3,00,000/- per year and as such are in need of financial help to pursue further studies.

For students who have secured 95% or more from State Board or 97% or more from Central Boards, maximum family income criteria may be relaxed in the specific cases at the discretion of the Trustees.

Further studies may be in any stream including Law (LLB), in any recognized University/Institution in India such as the NLUs.

Scholarship amount will be to cover Tuition Fees and Hostel Fees, [where applicable], subject to a ceiling of Rs. 50,000/- per student per year.

The Scholarship will be granted to 100 selected students for one year at a time and to be continued upon satisfactory performance by the Student in the preceding year, as evaluated by the Trust, up to completion of the Course subject to a ceiling of 4 years, on yearly basis. Additional onetime payment of Rs. 7000/- towards purchase of Books in the 1st Year will also be given.

Nilam Patel Bahushrut Foundation Scholarships

The Nilam Patel Bahushrut Foundation offers scholarships, prizes and awards for higher education to Hearing Impaired students of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Eligible students under the PwD – Hearing Impairment category, from the NLUs in these two states will be eligible to apply. (GNLU Gandhinagar, MNLU Mumbai, MNLU Nagpur, MNLU Aurangabad)

Applications for scholarships are invited in the first week of July every year through press release in all the leading newspapers and magazines of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Similarly, circulars are sent to all the deaf schools in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The scholarships are given at SSC, HSC, Graduate and Post Graduate levels. Over a period, several awards have been introduced for academic excellence. Two new ‘Study Abroad Scholarships’ have also been introduced in 2017, one each, for those hearing impaired students who are going abroad to pursue Bachelor’s or Master’s level degree program in any reputed college or university in any country.

Magma M-Scholar Program

M-Scholar was launched by Magma Fincorp in 2015 and offers the scholarship to meritorious students from economically disadvantaged families.

The M-Scholar program will provide scholarships to 100 deserving students for higher education at the undergraduate level.

The scholarship will be granted to students for 3-year degree courses in the general stream or 4 years of professional/ specialised courses in engineering, medical, law, etc.

South Indian Bank Scholarship Scheme

The South Indian Bank Ltd. under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) invites applications under the ‘SIB Scholar’, a scholarship scheme for students belonging to financially challenged families, pursuing their Under Graduate courses in Kerala.

Students from Kerala, who have completed their 12th Standard from any Govt. Higher Secondary School in Kerala with minimum 85% marks in the specified academic years, studying at NUALS Kochi will be eligible to apply.

The list of approved courses includes LLB – 3 or 5 year, full time under graduate courses.

The Bank will pay/reimburse 100% of the tuition, examination fees as per the approved Government Fee structure for students enrolled on merit in Govt./Aided/Self Financing colleges.

An additional monthly allowance of Rs.4000/- towards hostel/subsistence cost will be paid to the selected students for the entire duration of the course (excluding the internship period, if any).

Nirankari Rajmata Scholarship Scheme

Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation offers a Scholarship Scheme to provide Financial Assistance to Meritorious Students to pursue Professional and Technical Courses for Graduation and Post-Graduation levels and those who excel in sports and cultural activities at State/National Level. The scholarship covers the tuition fee of the selected applicants, subject to specific limits, terms and conditions.

Key Features
This Scholarship Scheme is open to all the students, who fulfil the eligibility criteria as laid down herein below and wish to pursue higher study in India only.

50% of Scholarship amount is reserved for girls. However, this amount can be used for other students, if eligible girl students are lesser than the reserved level.

The financial assistance to be offered to an applicant will depend on the requirement and capability of the student to pursue the relevant course.

The applicant must

  • have secured not less than 90% marks in Class XII examination
  • have the offer of admission in hand in any of the approved disciplines, which includes LLB courses, in the Institutions/Colleges recognized by the State/Central Government, including the NLUs

Various Company CSR Scholarships on the NSDL – Vidyasaarathi Platform

Vidyasaarathi is a technology-enabled initiative by NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited (NSDL e-Gov) to bridge the gap in education finance in the country through an online platform.

Government of Tamil Nadu Free education scholarship for Professional Courses – Including LLB

The Government of Tamil Nadu offer scholarships covering Tuition fee, Special fee and other non-refundable compulsory fees are paid as prescribed by Government and Examination fee in full.

Eligibility : Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and other eligible Communities students

  • The income of the parents should not exceed Rs.1,00,000/-
  • There should be no graduate in the family.

IndusInd Foundation Scholarships

The IndusInd Foundation provides educational scholarship every year at pan India level to Sindhi community students, after HSC education until examinations to meritorious and economically challenged students who would like to pursue their college post-graduation. As per the latest notification, only students from the Sindhi community are eligible to apply.

The eligibility conditions for grant of Scholarship are:

  • The applicant should have passed 12th class or equivalent examination from approved Board/University in the most recent academic year, securing not less the 85% marks on the aggregate.
  • The applicant should have secured admission to recognized and regular degree course, such as the LLB degree from in an NLU.
