NLU Campus Placement Salaries & Law College Rankings

Best Law College & NLU Campus Placement Package Salaries Ranking CLAT 2020 Mock Test Series

In this article, we are covering the rankings of the top Law Schools and NLUs in India, focusing on the NIRF 2019 rankings. We also look at the NLU Campus Placement salaries which will be of keen interest to the students taking the CLAT 2020 exam.

Given the high degree of competition in the CLAT 2020, an admission in any of the NLUs is a commendable achievement of the candidate’s abilities. It lays down an excellent foundation for a career in Law.

Placement data and salaries should not be considered as an indicator of the quality of the NLU, since many students may decide to opt out of the placement process to pursue independent practice, careers in the judicial service or take up higher education such as an LLM.

About NIRF Rankings

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was developed during 2014-15 as a robust National Framework for measuring performance and ranking of institutes of higher education across India.

The NIRF has separate category-specific rankings for colleges & universities and domain-specific rankings in their respective disciplines. As of 2019, the rankings are categorised under nine different heads – University, Engineering, College, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, Medical and an overall ranking.

NIRF Parameters for Ranking of Institutes

The NIRF uses five broad groups of parameters for the ranking process.

  1. Teaching, Learning and Resources
  2. Research and Professional Practice
  3. Graduation Outcomes
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity
  5. Perception

Traditional rankings predominantly have a higher weightage for the ‘Perception’ factor, whereas NIRF relies on multiple data points which are more objective, especially in a large higher education system like India, where perception data alone can be quite misleading and skew the rankings to a large extent.

As the NIRF rankings can be the basis of various Government actions, including allocation of funds or recognition as an Institution of National Importance, the Colleges and Universities have any additional incentive to participate in the rankings process.

Some of the factors considered by campus recruiters during NLU placements are academic track record, previous experience – if applicable, the interest of the candidate in the type of role, fitment into the recruiting organisation’s culture, candidate’s expectations, aspirations, interests and extra curricular activities. Personal attributes such as communication skills, clarity of thought and purpose, level of maturity also play a key role in convincing the recruiters.

Are NIRF Law School & NLU Rankings more dependable?

There are several other college rankings that are regularly published by various publications. Many of them tend to be quite vague in terms of the parameters used and the data collection methodologies. A high degree of weightage to ‘perception’ and placement parameters tends to skew the ratings significantly.

Non participation by several Institutes in one or more rankings can also lead to different institutes making it to the top 15 lists.

In general, the Outlook and India Today rankings are more realistic and reliable than many others. However, even these rankings are affected by non-participation by some of the top NLUs.

NIRF does have a higher degree of participation by almost all the top Law Colleges and all the NLUs across India.
